When will I get my joining instructions? Back to top

As soon as payment has been received for the course we send joining instructions via email or first class post if preferred. If booking on-line, you will receive an email immediately confirming your payment followed by the joining instructions within 60 minutes (during business hours) or the following working day (when the booking has taken place out of business hours)

Is there any physical stuff on the door supervisor course? Back to top

From June 2010 physical intervention will be part of the standard door supervisor course. (There is currently no physical training on the door supervisor course)


How many people will be on the course? Back to top

This will vary from month to month (12 – 16 is the normal)


How old do I have to be to do the SIA course/get an SIA licence? Back to top

There is no age limit on taking the course. However if the SIA change the rules after you have obtained the qualification but before you can apply for a licence, then it may be that you will need to take an additional qualification before being eligible to apply.

To be able to apply for your SIA licence you must be 18 years old

Door Supervisor & CCTV
Courses held over three days = 09:00 – 19:00
Courses held over four days = 09:30 – 17:00

NCPLH & Physical Intervention
Course held over one day = 09:00 – 17:30

I may be a bit late for the start of the course? Back to top

Please call the office if you are going to be late on the first day of the course so we can inform the tutor. If you are liable to be late after the first day, please inform the tutor on the course, but you should bear in mind that it is an SIA requirement that you complete the full 28 hours of tuition.


I only want to work as a Security Guard? Back to top

An SIA Door Supervisor licence will also enable you to work as a Security Guard and at Events such as the many music festivals that take place during the summer months.


Do you get jobs for people who do your course? Back to top

We don’t directly employ people as we are a training provider. However, we work with many security suppliers throughout the UK who are always happy to receive applications for work for people who have trained through DSTO

We do not provide lunch on any of our courses except the NCPLH, where a light lunch is included with in the course price

Identification

What ID do I need for the SIA Door Supervisor / CCTV Course? Back to top

To be eligible to take the door supervisor or CCTV course you must provide the required identification below: (This is the same identification requirements when applying for your SIA licence)

Accepted identification documents:

 Group A

  • Signed valid passport (any nationality)
  • Signed UK photo driving licence (both parts of the full or provisional licence are required)
  • Original UK Birth Certificate or certified copy (issued within 12 months of birth, but not a photocopy)
  • UK Adoption Certificate
  • Valid UK firearms licence with photo
Group B
  • Certified copy of a UK birth certificate (issued more than 12 months after date of birth, but not a photocopy)
  • Marriage Certificate (with translation if not English) or Civil Partnership certificate
  • Valid UK firearms licence with photo
  • P45 statement of income for tax purposes on leaving a job**
  • P60 annual statement of income for tax purposes**
  • Bank or Building Society statement issued to current address (You can use more than one statement as long as each is issued by a different service provider)*
  • Mortgage statement **
  • Council Tax statement **
  • Identity Card (issued only by the UK Home Office)
  • Pension, endowment or ISA statement**
  • Gas/electric/telephone/water/satellite/cable/mobile phone contract/utility bill from current address (You can only use a maximum of one utility bill)*

I haven’t lived in the UK for long. Is this going to affect my SIA application?

When completing the SIA application form you need to provide your address history for the past 5 years. If you have spent six months or more overseas in the five years prior to your application, you must provide a criminality certificate from each country you lived in (with an approved translation if the certificate is not in English). Your licence application cannot be processed until a criminality certificate is provided.

No. You must produce original copies of you identification at the point of the exams and when submitting your application to the SIA
 

What ID do I need for the NCPLH Course? o top

Accepted identification documents:

Candidates should present one item from Group A

Group A

  • Signed valid passport (any nationality)
  • Signed full UK paper driving licence
  • Signed full UK photo card driving licence (both parts are required)
  • Valid EU photo identity card
  • Valid UK firearms licence with photo

 Where candidates are unable to provide identification from Group A then they must present three items from Group B

 Group B

  • A credit card, debit card or switch card produced by a bank, building society or credit card company which contains the candidate’s signature provided this is accompanied by a recent statement*
  • A Birth Certificate
  • Marriage Certificate
  • P45 or P60 **
  • Mortgage statement**
  • House insurance policy at current address **
  • Financial statement e.g. pension **
  • Utility bill from current address e.g. gas/ electric/ telephone –inc mobile phone contract*
  • Certificate of British Nationality
  • British work permit or visa **

If the awarding body is BIIAB your results will usually be available within 4 working days of completing the course. (Please check when booking)

If the awarding body is NOCN, EDI or EdEXCEL your results will usually be available within 10 - 14 working days of completing the course. (Please check when booking)

We aim to get your certificates to you within two weeks of completing your course


What is involved in the exams? Back to top

Door Supervisor - BIIAB (Two 60 minute 40-question multiple choice papers with pass marks of 28 for Unit 1 and 24 for Unit 2)

CCTV - BIIAB (One 90 minute 60-question multiple choice papers with pass marks of 42, followed by a one hour practical assessment where eight learning outcomes must be achieved)

NCPLH - BIIAB (One 60 minute 40-question multiple choice papers with pass marks of 28)

DSTO have trained over 7000 candidates in security related courses and have a 96% pass rate

If you are unemployed you may be eligible to gain funding for your chosen course. Please contact us for more information.


Can I pay on the day? Back to top

No. All of our venues have an accommodation limit. For this reason we only accept booking and payment in advance. You can however secure your place on the course by paying a small deposit. Please contact us for more information

 

How do I pay for the course? Back to top

To book a place on the course all you need to do is pay for it. You can do that with one of the three following options:

Option 1
Book online at www.dsto.co.uk and pay by debit/credit card.

Option 2
Call our office on (01202) 299982 or Free phone 0800 652 9965 and pay by credit/debit card.

Option 3

We can give you our bank details and you pay the cash directly into our bank account via your local bank.
Please contact us for our bank details.

Once you have paid for the course, it confirms your place and we will send you out a map and set of joining instructions for that course.


SIA

What ID do I need to apply for the SIA Licence? Back to top

To be able to apply for your SIA licence you must submit the following identification together with your completed application form:

How do I get an SIA application form? Back to top

Our tutors carry a stock of SIA application forms on the course. Alternately you can request one via the SIA website. The application form will take between 2 – 10 working days to arrive.


What if I've got a Criminal Conviction? Back to top

Depending on the severity of the offence and time spent since the offence was committed will determine whether you are eligible to be granted an SIA licence. Visit the SIA website and use the criminal record indicator if you are unsure.


How long does it take to get the licence? Back to top

Providing the application form has been submitted without mistakes and is fully complete the average process time is between 3 and 6 weeks to get licence in hand.


How old do I have to be to get a licence? Back to top

You must be at least 18 years old, although you can obtain the necessary qualification before reaching this age.

What is the cost of the licence? Back to top

The cost of the SIA licence is currently £245.00 – however the SIA review this figure annually.
